Scent of Officials

It was one day in June, Juche 59 (1970). Chairman Kim Jong Il was talking to an official about the need for Party officials to be possessed of generosity, humanity and benevolence in addition to being well versed in the Party’s mass line. Even if all flowers look fragrant, the movement of bees and butterflies makes clear which is really fragrant and which is not, said the Chairman, adding that the same law holds true for human life. He continued: Just as flowers with sweet smell attract bees and butterflies, so can only warm-hearted Party officials be popular with people. The fragrance of Party officials is just humanity and benevolence. Humanity and benevolence can be said to be the scent of humans that makes a person admirable. Explaining that bees and butterflies fly onto fragrant flowers because fragrant ones have nectar for them to live on, and that flowers emit fragrance because they can be pollinated to produce seeds only when bees and butterflies flock to them, he said that the relationship between the Party and the people is just the same as that. Then, he stressed that the popular masses can carve out their destiny and glorify their political integrity only when they are led by the Party, their vanguard organization, with their destiny entrusted to it, and that the Party can emerge victorious in a revolution only when it rallies the popular masses behind itself.

World of Fantasy

The opening ceremony of Yangdok Hot Spring Resort that was held with splendor in the presence of the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un several years ago touched people’s heartstrings. Yangdok Hot Spring Resort was built wonderfully as a comprehensive and modern service base in a brief span of less than a year in such difficult conditions. In the opening ceremony, the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un said with great pleasure that the wish of President Kim Il Sung and Chairman Kim Jong Il, who were so solicitous about building our people a cultural resort in Yangdok area, which had been famous for hot springs from olden times, had come true. Yangdok Hot Spring Resort is indeed a world of fantasy based on the wish, the desire of Comrade Kim Jong Un to show the people all the love of the great leaders, who devoted their all to the happiness of the people.

From the Juche Viewpoint

Chairman Kim Jong Il, sitting together with some officials on May 1st, Juche 95 (2006), said that May Day had been known to be an international holiday for workers all over the world so far, but it was necessary to renew its understanding, and he confirmed the grounds one by one. Giving the officials a clear picture of the changed position of the working class and their social and class relationships with scientific evidences and logical arguments, he said: The concept of working people includes workers, farmers and intellectuals. Calling May Day a holiday for the workers the world over is not accurate for the character of our Party. Our Party is a mass party of the working people that consist of the progressive elements of workers, farmers and intellectuals. So when we say it is a holiday of the working class, it is felt like the mass character of our Party is belittled…. Saying that after liberation, our Party saw to it that workers, farmers and intellectuals enjoy May Day altogether as a working people’s holiday, he continued that we should change the slogan “Workers of all countries, unite!” into “Working people of the whole world, unite!” in our own way from now on and keep to it, stressing that it is just Juche.

Motto of Life

One day in May, Juche 106 (2017), the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un visited a disabled soldiers’ essential plastic goods factory and went round the room for education in the revolutionary history built inside the factory. When he found himself before a photographic image of Chairman Kim Jong Il on an inspection of the factory, he noted that the instruction of the Chairman that those who would have been treated like dirt in other societies were being respected as precious national treasures and honoured disabled soldiers in our country was really meaningful. Then, he called on all the disabled soldiers to lead worthy lives with the profound meaning of the instruction deep in mind.

Saying that Tireless Efforts Should Be Made

One day in April, Juche 101 (2012), with the significant Day of the Sun just ahead, the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un said some meaningful words to some officials. Saying that true to the lofty intention of President Kim Il Sung and Chairman Kim Jong Il, who regarded the idea of “The People are God” as their mottos, they should regard people as Heaven, boundlessly respect and hold them up, and place their demands and interests first in all undertakings, he earnestly instructed that all the party organizations should always love and take sincere care of them with maternal love, and bear responsibility for and glorify their political integrity to the end. On the day, the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un said earnestly that officials should dedicate their all to the people as there exist officials for the sake of people, not people for the sake of officials, and that by taking their cue from the President’s and the Chairman’s outlook on people, all officials should share weal and woe with people and make tireless efforts for them.

Consultative Meeting with Unusual Start

In May, Juche 70 (1981), a consultative meeting was held, in the presence of President Kim Il Sung, in the township of Undok County (Kyonghung County at present). At the very beginning of the meeting, the President asked an official who had lived longest there if he knew why the area was called Aoji. As he was tardy in answering the question, another official answered for him that in the past it was such an area unfit for human inhabitation that the inhabitants used to say to the pieceworkers to coal mines there for digging coal “Oh, please, you’d rather not come here.” (pronounced as “A, oji malla” in Korean), which was later fixed to be the name, Aoji. Guessing that it was named so because coal miners found it too hard to survive and make a living before liberation as they were forced to crawl to narrow dim coalfaces to do primitive jobs under the whips of cruel overseers, he said that the name must have been used from the period before the feudal Joson dynasty. At that time, an official came into the meeting venue and whispered something to the President. Then, the President reported to the audience that he had guessed right, saying that he had just got a reply from an official in Pyongyang whom he had commissioned to trace the origin of the name “Aoji” as he felt it did not sound like Korean. It was not Korean, indeed. Informing them of the origin, the President said that the names given by the foreign invaders should not continue to be in use. Then, he stressed the need to change all the names of the places and factories there beginning with “Aoji” into Korean. It was a significant moment that gave a valuable philosophy that when the Juche character and national identity are thoroughly embodied, we can victoriously advance the socialist construction with the independent dignity and national pride.
